Pradeep S Mehta, Secretary General of Jaipur-based CUTS International, has been honoured with a membership of the Advisory Council of T20 South Africa. This high-level Council comprises eminent experts from across G20 nations and advises the official Think Tank engagement group (T20) under South Africa’s G20 presidency in 2025. The Council is jointly convened by the Institute for Global Dialogue (IGD), the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), and the Institute for Pan African Thought and Conversation (IPATC).

Mr Mehta brings a wealth of experience to this role, having earlier served on the International Advisory Council of T20 during Brazil’s presidency and currently serving as a Member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General’s NGO Advisory Board, among other relevant bodies. Besides these affiliations, CUTS International have also partnered with SAIIA and IGD on international economic projects, which included South Africa, in the past.

G20, comprising 19 countries and two regional blocs, the European Union and the African Union, accounts for over 80 per cent of the global economy and is the premier forum for international economic cooperation.

T20 South Africa will support the Presidency’s core priorities of Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability through policy research and multi-stakeholder engagement. Its task forces will address key areas such as inclusive economic growth, sustainable finance, and global governance reforms. The Advisory Council will play a strategic role in guiding these efforts and shaping impactful policy recommendations.

Speaking on the honour, Mehta said, “This opportunity will help CUTS amplify the Global South’s voice”. South Africa’s G20 presidency offers a unique moment to push for inclusive development and sustainability.”

“This is a continuation of what India championed during its 2023 presidency by securing permanent membership for the African Union in the G20,” he added. “We must carry that spirit of inclusiveness forward.”

CUTS International, through its global presence in Asia, Africa, and international policy hubs like Geneva and Washington DC, is well-positioned to support the G20 process by offering grounded and diverse perspectives. The organisation was also one of the few Indian civil society entities actively advocating for the African Union’s G20 inclusion during India’s presidency.

Founded over four decades ago, CUTS International is a global think-and-action-tank working on public policy issues of trade, regulation, and governance with the guiding vision of “consumer sovereignty in the framework of social justice.”
