CUTS Calcutta Resource Centre (CUTS-CRC) organised a workshop involving media personnel from all over the state at Kolkata, West Bengal, on March 01, 2006. The programme was held under the Grassroots Reachout & Networking in India on Trade & Economics (GRANITE) project that looks forward to enhance the capacity of the civil society organisations (CSOs) and the local media so that they can articulate and analyse the implications of international trade negotiations. The programme involved a panel discussion on the subject ‘State Agricultural Policy and WTO’. The panellists were Milind Murugkar, Journalist from Loksatta; Soumen Sikdar, Professor, Calcutta University; Santanu Sanyal, Logistics Editor, The Hindu Business Line; and Dr. Kanai Mitra, Editor, Sabuj Sona. Eminent journalist from The Telegraph, Jayanta Basu, moderated the session. The speakers highlighted the role of state on shaping the economic policy in the globalised regime and vis-à-vis the role of media in the modern era of technological advancement. About 50 journalists from city and district-based media houses attended the workshop.
