A seminar on consumer awareness is being organised by South Indian Bank Grand Kerala Shopping Festival (GKSF) in association with the Department of Consumer Affairs, GoI, for guiding consumers in making smart shopping choices.

Union Minister of State for Food, Consumer Affairs & Public Distribution Prof KV Thomas will inaugurate the seminar on January 5 at Bolgatty Island Resort, Kochi.

Minister for Tourism AP Anilkumar will preside over the function. Minister for Food, Civil Supplies, Consumer Protection and Registration Anoop Jacob will be the Guest of Honour. The seminar comes at a time when Kerala is pitching to become an international shopping destination wherefrom people from all walks of life can experience the delights of shopping.

The ongoing Grand Kerala Shopping Festival is part of the attempts to achieve this objective. Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, GoI, Pankaj Agrawala will present the concept and theme of the seminar. MLA S Sarma; Addl Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, GoI, Afzal Amanullah; and Managing Director, Consumerfed, Dr Riji G Nair will offer felicitations. Kerala Tourism Secretary Suman Billa will deliver the welcome address and Director, GKSF, UV Jose will propose thanks. A technical session that will follow the inauguration will touch upon key legislations including ‘Consumer Protection Act’ and ‘Prevention of Food Adulteration Act’ to make consumers more aware of their rights.

Joint Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, GoI, Manoj Parida will chair the technical session, in which Dr Riji Nair will highlight Kerala’s success story in identifying and addressing consumer needs.

Kerala Food Safety Commissioner Dr Biju Prabhakar will speak about the problems of food adulteration and Director, CUTS International, George Cheriyan will elaborate on ‘Consumer Act & Protection of Consumer Rights.’ An interactive session will follow the technical presentations.
