Economic growth a must for poverty reduction: Montek

New Delhi, July 11 (IANS) Although poverty in India had decreased in the last two decades, the access to opportunities still remained restricted for many people, Planning Commission Deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said Monday.

‘Independent of the method of assessment, poverty in India has decreased in the last two decades. However, this has not translated into equality of access to opportunities. And therefore, inclusion requires a multi-pronged response,’ said Ahluwalia at a panel discussion organised by CUTS International.

Ahluwalia said even though most states were witnesseing greater economic growth, within them the level of inequality among the haves and have-nots was worrisome.

He added that there is greater economic growth across all states. However, within states, the inequality is worrisome. He underlined four areas: energy, agriculture, urbanisation, water and land that required concerted efforts to make growth inclusive
