New Delhi,
July 11 (IANS) Although poverty in India
had decreased in the last two decades,
the access to opportunities still
remained restricted for many people,
Planning Commission Deputy chairman
Montek Singh Ahluwalia said Monday.
‘Independent
of the method of assessment, poverty in
India has decreased in the last two
decades. However, this has not
translated into equality of access to
opportunities. And therefore, inclusion
requires a multi-pronged response,’ said
Ahluwalia at a panel discussion
organised by CUTS International.
Ahluwalia
said even though most states were
witnesseing greater economic growth,
within them the level of inequality
among the haves and have-nots was
worrisome.
He added
that there is greater economic growth
across all states. However, within
states, the inequality is worrisome. He
underlined four areas: energy,
agriculture, urbanisation, water and
land that required concerted efforts to
make growth inclusive
