Health is a state of complete, physical, mental, & social well-being & not merely the absence of disease – World Health Organisation

The scope of the word ‘health’ is not limited to medical science but the word highlights many aspects related with the day to day actions of life and overall development of society as a whole. A woman who generally is responsible for the health of the family is found to be ignorant about the fact related with the health. Hence, health education is a must, which aims at developing a sense of responsibility for the betterment of her own health as an individual and also of the family and the community.

With this as backdrop, during 25-30 December 2000, the CUTS Centre for Human Development, Chittorgarh, Rajasthan organised a comprehensive workshop on ‘Training of Master Trainers’. The event was organised as part of a project titled …. being implemented in association with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and with the support of the World Health Organisation, New Delhi office. 

Objectives 

The basic objective was to spread information on health issues at the grassroots with the help of the members of self-help groups. They were selected as master trainers, being committed and dedicated towards social development at the grassroots. The training aimed towards developing and enhancing skills of the participants and catalysing for actions on their part to inculcate and reach out to the community at large with messages of positive changes in their attitude towards women’s health.

Participants

The selection of participants was based on their association with women health issues and women’s groups viz. aganwadi workers, health workers, teachers, nurses, etc. A total of 25 participants from two districts (Chittorgarh and …. ) attended the training programme while four persons were from the government departments. The education level ranged from primary to graduation and age group ranged from 18 to 41 years.

Methodology & Proceedings 

Participatory methods like group discussions, role-play, demonstrations, video films, etc. were key features of the training. The participants were briefed about the objectives and the activities to be done at the grassroots. Discussions were on the present situation with respect to women’s health, particularly in rural areas. It also covered various related aspects such as types of diseases and therapies and imperatives of a rational health care system. Future planning and strategies for the implementation of the project were also discussed.

Feedback 

The participants reveal that the programme enabled them to develop critical thinking and carrying forward the message to the community at large, particularly the women-folk, by broadening their realm of knowledge. 

The Way Forward 

It has been decided that regular meetings will be conducted at the village level and follow-up will be done. One of the strategies would be to ensure the participation of men-folk at the village level meetings, so that they can be sensitised on issues pertaining to women’s health in general and reproductive health in particular.
