State-Business Interface Meeting (SBIM) Effective regulation
of Pharmaceutical Industry for Better Business

CUTS in order to
take the discussion forward on exploring how phama firms
could promote Business Responsibility (BR) and behave as
better business in India given the public interest interface
of the industry, is organising a State-Business Interface
Meeting on 11th December, 2013 in New Delhi. The meeting
would try to facilitate a discourse among senior policy
makers and industry leaders in the pharmaceutical sector, to
develop a common understanding on feasibility and importance
of BR in the sector. It would also help develop clarity on
the role that central and state governments, regulatory
agencies and business associations need to play in moving
this agenda forward. Further, one of the anticipated outcomes
from the event would be identification of positive changes
that can be brought about in the process of implementing
policies and regulations in the pharmaceutical sector to
promote responsible business. It would also throw some light
on the manner in which some of the key stakeholders need to
improve their interactions.

Stakeholder Consultation Meeting on National Public
Procurement Policy in India

with support from the British High Commission, is organising
a half-day stakeholder consultation in Jaipur on 10th
December, 2013 in Jaipur.
CUTS International
is organising a series of regional stakeholder consultations
to understand their experience in public procurement system
and to obtain stakeholder-inputs on (draft) policy briefs
exploring interfaces between procurement policy and other
macroeconomic policies such as manufacturing policy,
competition policy, sustainable procurement, trade policy,
fiscal policy and state-government-level-procurement policy
in order to adapt them for the National Public Procurement
Policy. These meetings are being held in Jaipur, Bhopal,
Mumbai, Bangalore and Ranchi.

on 6th December, 2013 in Bangalore to discuss the findings
of the BRCC Project report entitled “Rethinking Business
Responsibility in India” . The main objective behind
organising this event is to share the findings of the BRCC
project with relevant stakeholders related to pharmaceutical
and private healthcare sector and especially scholars with
rich experience and interest on Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR)/Business Responsibility (BR) issues in

The Training Workshop on
promoting business responsibility is being organized under the BRCC
project, so as to facilitate the process of adoption of responsible way of
doing business from the part of pharmaceuticals firms and private
hospitals in India. The Workshop is intended to be a technical assistance
activity, a training opportunity and a forum for exchange of findings of
the BRCC project. The workshop also aims at identifying regulatory
bottlenecks creating obstacle towards adoption of responsible conduct by
the pharma firms and private hospitals.

Evolving Responsible Private Healthcare Sector through
Multi-stakeholder Engagement

The meetings are
being organised in order to examine existing challenges
facing uptake of responsible business practices in the
Private Healthcare sector at the state level and initiate a
discussion to address them. Through these meetings Consumer
Unity & Trust Society (CUTS) and key actors in each of these
states would try to comprehend difficulties faced by the
Private Hospitals in becoming more responsible entities.
Understanding these limitations would allow preparation of a
roadmap for promotion of better business in the sector at the
state level.
